Installation of SÜLZLE KOPF SynGas system commences

SÜLZLE KOPF SynGas GmbH & Co. KG, based in Sulz a. N., commenced the installation of the SynGas system at the Koblenz sewage treatment plant on Tuesday. The expert in sewage sludge exploitation for energy production is part of the SÜLZLE Group and has a subsidiary in Tübingen. The system is an important component for the EU-promoted pilot project “SusTreat”, an energy self-sufficient sewage plant which is part of the Koblenz urban drainage system. In addition, the drainage and drying specialists of SÜLZLE KLEIN GmbH last year installed a Pro-Dry 2/4 belt dryer, which prepares the sewage sludge for the gasification plant.

The KOPF SynGas system was delivered in several individual parts. Moreover, the first components of the gasifier, which is the heart of the system, were also erected and welded on site. “With our technology, we are making a significant contribution to the “SusTreat” project”, explains Dr. Stephan Mey, Managing Director of SÜLZLE KOPF SynGas. Yesterday, numerous representatives of the press were present at the Koblenz large-scale sewage treatment plant site for the commencement of the installation of the SynGas system. Those attending from the City of Koblenz included Head of Building Works, Bert Flöck, Works Manager, Bernhard Mohrs, and the superintendents of the sewage treatment plant, Thomas Kesselheim and Ulrich Marquart.

The objective of the “SusTreat” pilot project is to generate energy autonomously. Sewage treatment plants are amongst the largest communal energy consumers – around 20% of the power requirement of towns and communities is down to them. In order to supply the sewage treatment plant as self-sufficiency as possible, the operator is relying on the high potential of the sewage sludge. This contains large quantities of carbon which can be converted to energy by gasification and is where the innovative technology of SÜLZLE KOPF SynGas and SÜLZLE KLEIN comes to bear.

The drainage and drying specialists of SÜLZLE KLEIN GmbH had already commissioned a Pro-Dry 2/4 belt dryer for the project as long ago as last year. This brings the sewage sludge to a residual dryness of up to more than 90%. In doing so, a solid granulate is formed which the sewage plant operator stores in an interim storage silo. The KOPF SynGas system then gasifies the granulate at a temperature of around 850 degrees Celsius. This completely destroys organic toxins such as leftover medicines, hormones and bacteria. The result is an inflammable gas which is subsequently scrubbed in several stages to remove further polluting substances such as heavy metals, tars and sulphur. The gas can then be used in an adjacent combined heat and power plant for recovering heat or in a gas engine to generate electricity. The SynGas system is so flexibly designed that it can generate only heat, only electricity or both, depending on the requirement. The ash produced during gasification contains minerals and phosphates. This can be exploited further in the form of fertilisers for agricultural purposes or for recovering the valuable phosphate. The high potential commercial value of the sewage sludge is therefore fully exploited.

“The combined know-how of SÜLZLE KOPF SynGas and SÜLZLE KLEIN enables a sophisticated and sustainable energy concept, in which all elements of the process chain mesh perfectly with one another,” emphasises Dr. Mey. The installation of the KOPF SynGas system is planned to be completed in May 2017. The whole project is then expected to be finished in October.

SÜLZLE KOPF ensures smooth changeover in Böblingen

SÜLZLE is one of the Top 100 of innovative companies 2016

Firm from Rosenfeld joins Germany’s elite group of innovative companies / Award to be presented by Top 100 mentor Ranga Yogeshwar

The 23rd Top 100 awards for Germany’s most innovative SMEs are about to be presented, and this year, the SÜLZLE Group is joining this elite group. The firm, which is based in the town of Rosenfeld in Baden-Württemberg, took part in a rigorous, scientific selection process that analysed innovation management and successful innovation. Ranga Yogeshwar, the competition mentor, will present the top innovators with their awards at the German SME Summit in Essen on 24 June.

The Top 100 award-winning SÜLZLE Group transforms what seems to be a waste product into a valuable commodity. Every year, some two million tonnes of sewage sludge is produced in German sewage treatment plants during wastewater purification. This is usually incinerated, as the sludge contains a lot of harmful substances and dangerous chemicals. But sewage sludge is also a valuable resource, which SÜLZLE can render useful thanks to its innovative solution. The SynGas gasification plant turns sewage sludge into gas at temperatures in excess of 800 degrees. The high temperatures and additional purification stages ensure that all chemical and biological toxins are broken down – resulting in a synthetic gas, which a combined heat and power plant can turn into electricity. This, in turn, can be used to cover the power needs of the sewage treatment plant. And the ash generated by the gasification process is rich in phosphorous – the key ingredient in agricultural fertilizers. “Sewage sludge is virtually a renewable resource. Up until now, it has simply been disposed of, but we’re recycling it and deriving energy from the process,” explained managing director Heinrich Sülzle.

The Rosenberg-based SÜLZLE Group, which was founded in 1880 and is now run by the fourth generation of the family, has the necessary experience when it comes to process optimisation. SynGas is only one example of this innovative firm’s wide-ranging expertise. Another example is AK-DOS: SÜLZLE’s system for dosing and storing powdered activated carbon, one of whose applications is in the fourth purification stage for treating conventionally purified waste water. This south German firm offers solutions in a wide range of fields including environmental and building engineering, plant engineering and steel trading, and has substantially expanded its portfolio in recent years. It has drawn on its wide-ranging strengths to achieve this and created synergies between the different areas. The SÜLZLE Group’s customers provide additional impetus for its innovative developments. If a problem arises, the firm’s 500 employees respond immediately and develop customised solutions. At present, the Group holds a total of eight patents.

This year, more than 4,000 companies registered an interest in taking part in the Top 100 competition, with 366 of them applying for the qualification round and 284 getting through to the finals. Ultimately, 238 made it into the Top 100 (maximum of one hundred in each of the three size categories). Once more, the companies were evaluated by Nikolaus Franke, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, and his team. They examined more than 100 parameters in the following five assessment categories: ‘Innovation-friendly Senior Management’, ‘Climate of Innovation’, ‘Innovative Processes and Organisation’, ‘Innovations Marketing’ and ‘Successful Innovations’.

The Top 100 are among the pacesetters in their sectors. Statistics reveal that the evaluation process included 97 German market leaders and 32 global market leaders. On average, they generated 40 per cent of their recent revenue from innovations and product improvements, which they brought to the market before their competitors. Their revenue growth rate was 28 percentage points higher than the average for their industries. In the last three years, these SMEs have together applied for a total of 2,292 German and international patents. This ability to innovate also pays dividends in terms of jobs, with the Top 100 planning to take on around 9,500 new employees in the next three years.

The Top 100‘s mentor, science journalist and television presenter Ranga Yogeshwar, is impressed by the quality of the companies and hopes they will become role models. ‘The way in which the Top 100 companies generate new ideas and develop groundbreaking products and services based on them is remarkable in the truest sense of the word. I am delighted that the award highlights these qualities. I hope their success will encourage others to follow in their footsteps, because this culture of innovation is going to become increasingly important for all companies.”

SÜLZLE KOPF Anlagenbau gains second place in the GreenTec Awards

Together with business partner BHS-Sonthofen, the environmental and energy technology specialist SÜLZLE KOPF Anlagenbau gained second place in the GreenTec Awards, Europe’s largest environmental and economic awards event. In the “Recycling and Resources” category, the company of SÜLZLE Group convinced the jury with a process for the preparation of hydrocarbonaceous and CFC refrigerators. The “IC process” enables the cooling agents and propellants contained in the devices to be disposed of in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The professional recycling of refrigerators is an important task from an ecological perspective: Approximately three to four million devices are discarded every year in Germany alone. Each of these devices contains an average of half a kilogram of coolant and propellant and these would escape into the atmosphere if not correctly disposed of. “According to the German Environmental Aid, this amount corresponds to approximately 5,000 kilograms of CO2” said Peter Althaus, General Sales Manager of SÜLZLE KOPF Anlagenbau during his speech at the award ceremony. Thanks to the IC (Impact and Catalytic) process developed by the company in cooperation with the plant manufacturer BHS-Sonthofen, the escaping coolant is collected in a multi-stage exhaust gas purification process, converted into harmless substances and then re-used. “The IC process means we can currently dispose of 97 percent of the coolant and propellant contained in these devices and dispose of it in an environmentally-friendly way”, emphasised Althaus.

The sustainable technology also convinced the GreenTec Awards jury. Launched in 2008, the GreenTec Awards prizes are given to innovative green projects. It is one of the most coveted environmental awards in Europe. The candidates include both well-known companies and young minds with fresh ideas. The GreenTec Awards are awarded annually in 14 categories, ranging from vehicle mobility, energy-based construction/living, water and waste water to recycling and resources. The award ceremony on 29 May in Berlin’s Tempodrom was seen by around 1,000 guests from industry, science, politics, culture and the media. The welcoming speech was given by the Head of the Chancellery and former Environment Minister Peter Altmaier.
